A bathroom sink leak can be confusing.<\/p>\n

It gets worse when the drain looks correct.<\/p>\n

This problem often happens after installing a pop-up drain.<\/p>\n

The drain has two slots near the top.<\/p>\n

Those slots are usually for a sink overflow.<\/p>\n

A sink overflow gives extra water a path out.<\/p>\n

It helps prevent the bowl from spilling over.<\/p>\n

The overflow holes inside the sink feed a hidden channel.<\/p>\n

That channel should drain into the pop-up drain body.<\/p>\n

That is why some drain bodies have side slots.<\/p>\n

But water should not pour outside the sink.<\/p>\n

If it does, something is wrong.<\/p>\n

What May Be Happening<\/h2>\n

When lots of water runs down the drain, pressure can build.<\/p>\n

That water may push into the overflow passage.<\/p>\n

If the sink or drain is not sealed properly, water escapes.<\/p>\n

It may leak from the back or bottom of the sink.<\/p>\n

This can look like a bad drain stopper.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it is the wrong drain assembly.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the drain is right, but installed incorrectly.<\/p>\n

A sink with overflow holes needs an overflow-style drain.<\/p>\n

A sink without overflow holes needs a non-overflow drain.<\/p>\n

Mixing those parts can cause leaks.<\/p>\n

Answer: Maybe, but first check the drain seal and sink overflow design. Since your sink has real overflow holes, you usually need a drain with overflow slots. If water pours outside the sink, the overflow channel may not be sealed, the gasket may be wrong, or the drain may not match the sink.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Check The Drain Gaskets<\/h2>\n

The top flange must seal inside the sink bowl.<\/p>\n

Plumber\u2019s putty or silicone is often used there.<\/p>\n

Always follow the drain maker\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n

The rubber gasket below the sink matters too.<\/p>\n

It must sit flat against the sink bottom.<\/p>\n

Do not place putty under that lower rubber gasket.<\/p>\n

That area needs a clean rubber seal.<\/p>\n

If the gasket is crooked, water can escape.<\/p>\n

If it is too small, water can escape.<\/p>\n

If the nut is loose, water can escape.<\/p>\n

Check For Slow Drainage<\/h2>\n

A slow drain can push water into the overflow path.<\/p>\n

That can expose a weak seal fast.<\/p>\n

Run water and watch the drain speed.<\/p>\n

If water pools in the bowl, check the trap.<\/p>\n

Also, check the pop-up rod opening.<\/p>\n

Hair and soap can collect there.<\/p>\n

Remove the pop-up drain and inspect everything.<\/p>\n

Confirm the sink has a real overflow passage.<\/p>\n

Clean the sink surface before reinstalling.<\/p>\n

Then test with a full flow of water.<\/p>\n

Also, fill the bowl and release it fast.<\/p>\n

That test will show hidden leaks.<\/p>\n

If water still exits the sink body, replace the drain.<\/p>\n

If that fails, the sink may have a defect.<\/p>\n
