A sewer smell in a lower-level bathroom can be hard to trace.<\/p>\n

This is even more true in a three-level condo.<\/p>\n

The smell may seem to be coming from the toilet.<\/p>\n

It may also seem like it is coming from the sink.<\/p>\n

But the real source can be somewhere nearby.<\/p>\n

In this case, the bottom floor has a half bath.<\/p>\n

The bathroom has a sink and a commode.<\/p>\n

The only floor drain is in the mechanical room.<\/p>\n

That drain is away from the bathroom.<\/p>\n

A bucket of water was poured into that floor drain.<\/p>\n

That was a smart first step.<\/p>\n

A dry trap can let sewer gas enter the room.<\/p>\n

Adding water can block that gas again.<\/p>\n

Why does a condo half bath still smell like sewer gas?<\/p>\n

Answer<\/h2>\n

The smell may come from a weak toilet seal, a loose toilet, a hidden sink drain leak, a bad vent, or a nearby dry trap.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sink is used often.<\/p>\n

That means its trap is likely not dry.<\/p>\n

Still, the sink should be checked closely.<\/p>\n

Look under the cabinet with a flashlight.<\/p>\n

Check each slip nut and pipe joint.<\/p>\n

Also, check the overflow opening in the sink.<\/p>\n

Odor can build up there from old grime.<\/p>\n

Next, check the toilet base.<\/p>\n

A bad wax ring may leak sewer gas.<\/p>\n

It may not always leak water.<\/p>\n

Push gently on the toilet bowl.<\/p>\n

If it rocks, the seal may be broken.<\/p>\n

The toilet should sit firmly on the floor.<\/p>\n

Also, check the bolts at the base.<\/p>\n

Loose bolts can let the toilet move.<\/p>\n

That movement can damage the wax seal.<\/p>\n
