That sound can be scary. It may sound like a faraway helicopter. It may happen after flushing a toilet. It may also start after using a sink, shower, or hose.<\/p>\n

In this case, the timing matters. The noise started right after the lawn sprinkler system was opened for spring and summer use. That makes the sprinkler system a likely cause.<\/p>\n

The strongest sound is near the well pipe entry point. That same area also has the sprinkler pipe leaving the house. This points to a pressure or valve issue near that plumbing zone.<\/p>\n

Answer<\/h2>\n

The thumping is likely from water hammer, a loose valve, trapped air, or a pressure problem. Since it started after sprinkler startup, check the sprinkler shutoff, backflow preventer, irrigation valve, and well pressure tank first.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Water hammer happens when moving water stops too fast. The sudden stop sends a shock through the pipes. That shock can make pipes bang, shake, or thump.<\/p>\n

A sprinkler valve can cause this when it opens or closes too quickly. A loose shutoff valve can also vibrate when water flows. That vibration can travel through the whole house.<\/p>\n

Air in the sprinkler line may also make the noise worse. This can happen when the system is opened after winter. Air pockets can shake pipes until they clear.<\/p>\n

If the home uses a well, the pressure tank should also be checked. A bad tank bladder can cause fast pressure changes. That can create pulsing, thumping, or shaking pipes.<\/p>\n

Start by turning off the sprinkler supply valve. Then use water inside the house. If the noise stops, the sprinkler system is likely involved.<\/p>\n
