Shower Valve: Bend Copper or Use Fittings?

Installing a Hansgrohe iBox shower valve can feel tricky.

The valve must sit square, solid, and at the right depth.

That matters before tile, trim, and finished walls go in.

In this bathroom remodel, the existing supplies are 1/2-inch copper.

The valve uses 3/4-inch connections with threaded 90-degree adapters.

The hot side is about 4 inches off.

The cold side is about 1 inch off.

The cold line may be moved by hand.

But leaving copper under stress is not a good plan.

Pipe tension can stress joints, threads, and soldered areas.

It may also make the valve harder to secure.

Question

Should you bend the copper, use fittings, or switch to PEX?

Answer

Use fittings for larger offsets, and only bend soft copper when it bends cleanly without strain.

For a 4-inch offset, fittings are usually the cleaner choice.

A pair of 45-degree fittings may work better than sharp 90s.

This keeps the pipe relaxed and easier to support.

For the 1-inch cold offset, a small bend may be fine.

Still, the pipe should not push or pull on the valve.

The valve body should be mounted firmly to the blocking.

The pipes should meet the valve without force.

Soft copper can be bent with the right bender.

The Copper Development Association has copper bending guidance.

Use the correct size bender for the tube.

Do not kink, flatten, or overwork the copper.

Water copper is not always the same as refrigeration lineset copper.

Soft copper is bendable, but it must be rated for plumbing.

Look for markings on the tube.

If the pipe is old, brittle, or unknown, use new material.

What About PEX?

PEX can make alignment easier in tight walls.

It also reduces the number of angled copper fittings.

Use approved fittings and follow local code.

The PEX Plumbing Design and Installation Guide is a helpful resource.

Support PEX correctly near the valve and drop ear.

The shower arm drop ear must be very solid.

It should not move when the shower arm is installed.

For the handheld outlet, plan the route before soldering anything.

Dry fit the valve, blocking, outlet, and drop ear first.

Then check the finished wall depth.

The trim must fit after the tile and backer board are installed.

Best Practical Choice

Use solid blocking for the iBox and drop ear.

Use copper fittings where the offset is large.

Use gentle bends only where the pipe allows it.

Use PEX only if code and fittings allow it.

Most importantly, avoid forced pipe alignment.

A relaxed layout is easier to service later.

It also helps prevent leaks inside the wall.

I’m Chris
